The Industrial Relationist

The Industrial Relationist is a workplace blog geared towards, but not exclusively for, Canadian labour relations practitioners. It aims to be informative and entertaining, and hope to get a discussion going among IR folks in Canada. The author has held management-side LR positions in the past. He currently still works in the field, but is blogging anonymously to stay on the right side of employment law! Enjoy!

P.S. I think you're an asshole

Gratuitous swearing? Well, yes, but it helps me make a point: the quote was featured in this Wonkette post on a Republican Representative who added a little, shall we say, "flair" to a constituent letter last year. (OK, OK, it was likely a staffer, but seriously, she HANDWROTE on the thing after it was typed up! Does no one proof-read anymore? Apart from me?)

And that's pretty much the same thing Bell's new owners said to BCEs top staff this week in the news. The meatiest quote here is, "We won't throw anybody out tomorrow morning, but we're making no promises," by Claude Lamoureux, CEO of the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.

It's a good thing unions and their members never, ever worry about what the new owners of their enterprise will do in the event of a merger or acquisition. Because then, goodness knows WHAT BCEs 30000+ employees might be thinking just about now.

"Hold on, hold on," you say. He's only talking about how management was too involved in the bidding process. Was Lamoureux talking about Senior Management when he made this quote? Yes, clearly that was the conext. But: Where does workplace culture start? That's right: the top of an organization. Oh, and let's remember, Lamoureux isn't 'making any promises.'

Like I said, it's a good thing all those employees aren't reading in between the lines. 'Cause otherwise buyout's would be in trouble. Yep, it sure is a good thing that's not happening. Ahem.
