Unions Protest Aussie PM: Anybody in downtown Ottawa today?
Good afternoon, folks. Just saw this today; apparently Australian PM John Howard is making the rounds in North America this week, and today he's in Ottawa. He's addressing Parliament today and a number of unions aren't happy.
CLC, CAW, PSAC and others are saying that by inviting PM Howard to speak to Canada's parliament, PM Harper is "sending the wrong message." For those of you who may not be aware, Howard's done some, well, interesting things in IR in Australia.
Decimating the public service was one. (He reduced their public works department from 3,000 to 300, in one example.)
Claiming a federal veto over Australian state employments AND the contracts that are negotiated under those laws was another.
At any rate, labour leaders are organizing a big "to-do" on the Hill today to protest the address. Did anyone happen to see it (the protest, that is)? Use the comments section to let us know how big the turn-out was (or, wasn't).
UPDATE: Yup, it happened. CBC has coverage. My favourite quote, from a PSAC worker: "We love Australian wine and beer, but there are some things we don't want to import from Australia."
